SESSION LEADER(S):David M Stack, Curt Hillegas, Amy Apon
ABSTRACT: At SC09 there was an enthusiastic BOF on getting started with institution-wide support for high performance computing. A majority of the attendees were from small HPC shops; in some cases the individuals in attendance were the entire staff for their institution. While the session was underway, participants spontaneously created a Google Group for “Small Centers for High Performance Computing." The online group has been active for the past year.
The group members will gather at SC10 to continue their discussions of (1) meeting the challenges of pent-up demand for HPC with limited resources; (2) defining the role of HPC support staff vis-à-vis IT staff who are employed by institutional computing centers or academic departments; (3) prioritizing and allocating the use of HPC resources; (4) economically sustaining HPC resources; (5) ensuring data confidentiality and security, e.g., FERPA and HIPAA requirements; and (6) storing and managing data for the long term e.g., NSF and NIH requirements.
The meeting will draw upon the resources generated by the NSF Sustainable Research Computing Centers Workshop that was held at Cornell University on May 3-5, 2010 and continues online at: https://mw1.osc.edu/srcc/index.php/Main_Page.
