ABSTRACT:
The Twentieth Century witnessed a tectonic shift in our understanding and practice of mathematics. During the last 60 years the computer has played an increasingly important role in the development of mathematics, ranging from its use in the proof of the Four Color Theorem to its use in discrete mathematics as an exploratory tool. In addition, the Common Core State Standards Initiative emphasizes modeling and visualization, using "technology for varying assumptions, exploring consequences, and comparing predictions with data.” This session will introduce teachers and teacher educators to a range of tools, from interactive applets to sophisticated mathematics computing environments.
