Convey’s Hybrid-Core Computing: The Thrill Is Back!

ABSTRACT: Remember the “good old days” of high-performance computing? Back then, every few months a new technology breakthrough would promise—and deliver—orders of magnitude more performance. Today, the widespread adoption of heterogeneous computing (typically GPU- and FPGA-based accelerators) reflects the search by HPC users to reclaim that excitement and achieve exascale-levels of performance.
One form of heterogeneous computing—hybrid-core computing, pioneered by Convey Computer Corporation—features an FPGA-based coprocessor loaded with application-specific instruction sets (called personalities). The coprocessor instruction sets appear as extensions to the x86 instruction set, and share the same physical and virtual address space with the host x86 processor. This approach reduces or eliminates the programming hurdles that make GPUs and FPGA-based accelerators so difficult to use.
