Multitiered Portal Architecture Powered by the Orbiter Service Oriented Architecture

ABSTRACT: The integration of emerging technologies and design patterns into the Multitiered Portal Architecture (MPA) enables a scalable and flexible architecture for novice to sophisticated user-communities that have the need to access grid, cloud, and high performance computing resources. The Orbiter Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) exposes RESTful service interfaces that power database access, federated user identity management, role-based service and resource access control, virtual machine management, component driven application development, etc. Transport level security as well as customizable multi-factor validation modes can be enabled on a per service basis providing a high quality of service in a secure environment. Thin-clients (Orbiter Pilot) only require common browser access while thick-clients (Orbiter Commander) can be installed and customized in a user-centric approach on local servers. To facilitate large-scale Orbiter deployments, Orbiter Basestations and Orbiter Network Nodes form a self-organizing network of service providers and storage resources facilitating data-intensive applications and user-community groups.
