ABSTRACT: Climate modeling, in particular making projections of climate risks that have predictive skill on timescales of many years, presents several challenges that probe the limits of current computing. First is the challenge of computational scalability, where the community is adapting to an era in which computational power increases depend on concurrency of computing, not on raw clock speed. Second is the challenge of data scalability, as we increasingly depend on experiments that result in petabyte-scale distributed archives. Third is the challenge of scientific scalability: how to enable the legions of non-climate scientists – for example, those involved in international security, public health, and the environment – to benefit from climate data. This talk surveys some aspects of current computational climate research as it rises to meet these simultaneous challenges of computational, data, and scientific scalability.
