High Performance Computing Software Applications for Space Situational Awareness

ABSTRACT: This poster presents the most recent Department of Defense High Performance Computing Modernization Program High Performance Computing Software Applications for Space Situational Awareness research and development. As the number of space objects is expected to grow to greater than 150,000 over the next several years, space object cataloging and maintenance has become extremely difficult. We describe space situational awareness (SSA) problems, how its many challenges and algorithms necessitate supercomputing, and how HSAI-SSA is providing breakthrough capabilities to solve many SSA problems that otherwise could not be solved. We then follow up with technical status information and achievements for several of our current supercomputing software algorithms and applications; including image enhancement, astrodynamics, and data integration. In closing, we summarize space challenges and capabilities, and the supercomputing technology transition payoffs that have been realized for selected applications and users.
