Scalability of the Numerical Solution of the Acoustic Wave Equation on the BG/P Platform

ABSTRACT: Seismic modelling is a strategic area of research for KAUST. Computational scientists at KAUST's Supercomputing Laboratory decided to test the Blue Gene/P's suitability for large-scale seismic processing by developing a new forward acoustic wave propagation code called KSL_Forward. Initial performance results form KSL_Forward were very favourable with strong scaling proceeding up to 16k cores (a factor of 4 greater than existing forward modelling production codes being run on Shaheen). KSL_Forward is hoped to be just the first of several seismic modelling tools to be developed at KAUST.
