A CCSM-based Terrestrial Ecosystem Model Parameterization Framework

ABSTRACT: Community Climate System Models (CCSM) is one of leading US climate models to advance our understanding on climate systems, and to improve our capability of better projecting future climate scenarios. In the poster, we demonstrate a framework to use site-based massive observation dataset (AmeriFlux) and high end computers (Jaguar and Kraken) to improve the fidelity of point-based Terrestrial ecosystem models within CCSM. Considering the general interests of this conference, our poster consists of several sections: 1) Background of point-based Terrestrial ecosystem model (Community Land Model) within CCSM; 2) Overview of observation datasets (AmeriFlux) and Cray Petascale supercomputers; 3) Design principles, and parameterization workflow diagrams; 4) Current I/O patterns and computing performances; and 5) Ongoing efforts on data staging and performance optimizations. To our best knowledge, this is one of first efforts of using eddy-covariance observation dataset, PetaScale computers, and point-based CLM to improve the biogeochemistry component within CCSM.
