ABSTRACT:
Systems administrators and engineers are traditionally self-taught, often finding their way into the profession through taking on tasks and providing services to others until those tasks occupy the vast majority of their time. Formal education, while important, often takes a backseat to internship, apprenticeship, and mentoring. The field as such is very diverse, welcoming intelligent, creative, and driven people from a very wide array of backgrounds. HPC Systems Administrators and Engineers typically are working at the edges of technology. Like their Large-Site Unix Administrator brethren, they often are called upon to provide expertise in software development and tools, domain science, hardware of all types, purchasing and acquisitions, environmental systems and engineering, and user management. This panel intends to discuss the pros and cons of various means of recruitment, educating novices, retraining senior staff, encouraging diversity, and ways that the community can work together to grow the profession.
