Sustainable and Extensible Approaches for Creating a Skilled Workforce in High Performance Computing and Innovations

ABSTRACT: There is a significant gap between advances in high performance computing environments - such as fast and multi-core processors for computing and visualization, storage and interconnects - and their optimal use for addressing challenges in science, engineering and medicine. This gap can be reduced by training the future workforce in disciplinary areas with emphasis on cross-disciplinary interests, transforming the current science into education through cyberinfrastructure, and fostering entrepreneurial motivation as a part of the training. From our experience in managing campus-wide research computing capabilities for over a decade now, we believe that the training team should consist of a mentor group derived from expertise in high performance computing, scientific domains, and industry. This approach is sustainable and extensible. It broadens participation and strengthens industry-academia partnerships through high performance computing. Institutional vision for the role of high performance computing in higher education is necessary for successful implementation of this approach.
