ABSTRACT: The importance of research data for modern science is growing daily, and new initiatives are required to cope with the resulting “data deluge”. From smart ‘phones to sophisticated scientific instruments, the amount of information being created is vast, affecting not just the natural sciences, but also the humanities, social and health sciences. Having access to such data will open new ways to mine knowledge out of the huge amounts of information that are becoming available across a range of research areas from astronomy to archaeology, and from physics to epidemiology. Incorporating e-Science digital repositories into an open information ecosystem will help support new scientific methods and paradigms, improving both the efficiency of the scientific process and its impact on society and the economy.
Today’s cyber-infrastructure is built on high-speed networks, high-capacity grid/cloud systems and specialised high-performance computing centres that are continuously evolving.
By considering these issues, this talk will suggest some opportunities and challenges for how cyber-infrastructures can evolve in the future to address the challenges facing research communities.
