DESCRIPTION:ABSTRACT: The Virtual Cell is designed for a range of scientists\, from experimental cell biologists to theoretical biophysicists\, studying dynamical cellular systems. The creation of biological and mathematical models can range from the simple ones used to evaluate hypotheses or to interpret experimental data\, to complex multi-layered models used to probe the predicted behavior of complex\, highly non-linear systems. Users build complex models to specify the physiology of the biological system including compartmental topology and geometry\, molecular characteristics\, and relevant interaction parameters. The mathematic-savvy user can specify the complete mathematical description of the model\, bypassing the schematic interface. The model equations may be solved as continuous or stochastic numerical models with solvers as explicit as Euler to fully-implicit spatial solvers. Participants will be introduced to creating ODE and PDE models within the Virtual Cell as well as accessing pre-existing models from publicly available databases.
