DESCRIPTION:ABSTRACT: Based on projections from models that represent the Earth’s climate\, we anticipate warming of the surface temperature\, sea level rise\, and systemic changes in weather.  The cause of the warming is greenhouse gases from burning of fossil fuels. The implications of these projections motivate changes in how we obtain the energy\, which stands at the foundation of societal success.  As we move to manage warming and adapting to climate change\, climate models move out of the venue of climate scientists to planning tools of resource managers and corporate strategists.  The demands on the models and modelers far out scale the resources of the climate community.  Despite the presence of successful community models\, there is a need for models that are configurable and usable by communities of nonexperts.  This talk discusses the challenges and possibilities of developing climate modeling systems that are open to broad community innovation\, development\, and application.
