DESCRIPTION;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:ABSTRACT: Smoothed Aggregation (SA) multigrid is a widely used algorithm=0Afor the scalable solution of linear systems that are at the heart of many=0ADOE parallel scientific computations. However, SA's cost grows=0Aunacceptably for problems involving multiple physics and large number of=0Anear-kernel components. This issue becomes more pronounced for stretched meshes=0Alarge material variation, and higher dimensionality.=0A=0ATo address SA's shortcomings, we have developed a new algorithm=0Athat allows explicit control of the grid transfer operators' sparsity patterns.=0AThis ensures low cost while tailoring performance for anisotropic problems. A=0Akey to the new algorithm is keeping good convergence by minimizing energies=0Aof grid transfer operators while capturing important near-kernel components.=0A=0AThis algorithm is the basis of a new parallel multigrid solver in=0Athe Trilinos project. The solver will leverage the modern Trilinos software=0Astack that abstracts the notion of a compute node in order to=0Aharness multi-core CPUs and GPUs.
